Alice’s Cheese Cake

This is another of Jane’s recipes that she had multiple copies of. She actually had mimeograph copies of this, the type of copy that is on a sort of thermographic paper, slick on one side and with a greyish hue. It was clearly a popular recipe, and even though this card was in one of those plastic sleeves it clearly has been used a lot. In pencil are notations of quantities to make 5 cheese cakes. Broccoli Casserole

I find the recipe cards that Jane used to be kind of cute and interesting. My gram used notecards. Some people use the ones with the old fashioned stove on them. For the most part, recipe cards are 3×5, but Jane’s are 6×5. Continue reading

Herb Grenda’s French Dressing

Herb Grenda must have been a friend of Jane’s. He was born in 1909 in Indiana, and can be found as a varsity football player for the Missouri Tigers back in ’33, ’34 and ’35. He was married to Alice on July 4, 1937 and they were together the rest of their lives. Herb died in 1976. Herb’s wife Alice was descended from Green Hills Pioneers to northern Missouri. iPad optimized, we’re cool like that

I know most of you reading Gram’s Recipe Box are not on an iPad, but just in case there is one other technophile-recipe lover out there like me, we are now optimized for the iPad. It will not affect the standard user experience, just if you had an iPad it would look really neato.

Steak Soup – Plaza III

Jane must have really liked this soup because she had three different notations of the recipe. One was a typed letter on country club stationery, one was a newspaper clipping, and then this one in her own hand. It sounds like a good dish, so maybe a couple of her friends found the recipe and sent it to her. Continue reading
