Oatmeal Cookies (Mrs Fairservice)

As oatmeal cookie recipes go, this one is pretty normal. I think I like the name of the source more than anything – Mrs. Fairservice just sounds so very proper and traditional, doesn’t it?

Oatmeal Cookies

2 cups B Sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup lard, 2 eggs, 1/2 teas cinn, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, 1/2 teas salt, 2 cups flour, 4 cups oatmeal, 1 cup raisins, 1 teas soda, enough sweet milk to make a stiff batter. Drop from a spoon.

  1. I like the “sweet milk” notation. I guess buttermilk was much more common then than it is now. Let’s just say my 8 yr old was fascinated by the concept of buttermilk when we were baking this last weekend. We didn’t have any so we did the old standby of lemon juice and milk, although I usually vinegar and milk, but I wanted a touch of flavor and thought the lemon would better than vinegar. “Why would anyone want sour, icky milk?” was the general consensus.
