This particular cake recipe was provided by Mrs. Rosenberg. I realized early on how recipe sharing was really an early form of social networking. Think about it. Before current technology (the kind that allows you to read this anywhere in the world on multiple types of devices!), handwritten communication was really the only way to do things, unless you had a typewriter or a phone. Penmanship was taught in school and often people had lovely script. When you visited friends and enjoyed a nice meal, you might ask for the recipe. When Mrs. Rosenberg wrote out her recipe, she was sharing her thoughts and care for her cake, plus maybe there was a family tradition behind it, and of course Mrs. Bartz would remember Mrs. Rosenberg when she read over that recipe, and touch that memory in her mind of that time they were together… Take the time to share with your friends and family, my friends.
Date Cake
1 cup sugar (white)
1 egg
1/2 cup butter
1 cup flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1 package dates
1 cup raisins
2 cups nuts
Cut dates & raisins then pour 1 cup boiling water over & put 1 teaspoon soda in. Let cool. Put apricots in if you like.
It stands to reason here that once you cool the dates & raisins, combine the rest of the ingredients and bake the cake!
