There are many ways to make bad frosting. Too much or not enough sugar, no vanilla, raw eggs, etc. A personal dislike of mine is almond flavored frosting. Just, no.
Frostings
1 cup Crisco
4 cups Pd sugar
3 tbs water
1 tsp vanilla
Dash salt
Mix well
I always like it when there is a name to go with a recipe. It somehow makes the recipe seem more approachable. Like if the recipe comes from someone you know and trust, there is an inherent understanding that it is going to taste good and probably make up well. Unless you are buddies with Julia Child or Martha Stewart, then….you are on your own. :-)
Sugar Cookies (Mary Moe)

Cut shortening into 1st 3 ingredients. Beat eggs and add sugar gradually. Mix till smooth. Into flour mix. Chill. Roll thin. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake 350 (5 – 10 min).
This reminds me of a recipe for easy party cookies that I make all the time. Some times I don’t use MnMs. I use chocolate chips, white choc chips and cranberries, mint chocolate chips…whatever. They bake up nice and are always a hit.
M-M Cookies
1 cup shortening
1 cup br sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 c flour
1 tsp soda
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups M-M
Bake 375 – put 3 or 4 M-Ms on top of each cookie
A couple years back I posted a recipe called Russian Teas that is basically the same recipe as above. I really like these cookies. They aren’t always as sweet as modern cookie preferences, and I like that. Too often the sugar overpowers the rest of the flavors. On this recipe, chop the nuts fine enough so they will be small bits within a 1″ ball. After chilling the dough, roll it into 1″ balls and bake.
Russin Tea Cokies
1 cup butter
1/2 cup pd sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup nuts
Chill dough. Bake 400 (10-12 min).
While warm roll in pd sugar. Cool and roll again.
I remember someone’s mom made these when I was a kid and I thought they were the most amazing, sinful things I had ever eaten. I haven’t much changed from that opinion since then, heh. It’s funny how she used oleo (margarine) when there is so much that is not low fat. I’d probably just use butter.
Seven Layer Bars
Melt 1 stick of oleo in 9×13 pan
Sprinkle 1 c graham cracker crumbs over oleo
1 cup coconut
1 cup butterscotch chips
1 cup choc chips
Drizzle 1 can Eagle Brand milk over layers
1 cup chopped nuts on top.
Bake 350 30 min
