Here’s an old school pudding recipe. You could certainly make this with Jello instant pudding, or even Jello “cook for a few minutes” pudding, but why would you when you can make it from scratch?
Chocolate Upside Down Pudding (Marnie)
1 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp B.P. (baking powder)
3/4 c white sugar
1/2 c milk
2 tbsp cocoa
2 tbsp melted butter
1 c walnuts
First mixture. Mix and put into greased pan. 8×8.
1 c brown sugar
4 tbsp cocoa
Mix. Dump onto first mixture.
Pour on 2 c boiling water. Bake 40 min 350. Turn upside down – serve warm. Wh cream if possible.
This one sounds like real comfort food! :)

It is real comfort food! There was a while there after we were married that you could buy pudding cake mix in a box. I think you did have to pour the boiling water over that one too.

I must admit that whenever chocolate is involved, the situation is invariably enhanced! It’s kind of amazing that dark chocolate can actually be good for you when eaten in moderate quantities.

I made this exactly as the recipe instructs. There is some stuff left out that I am sure only the writer of the recipe knew.
1. 1st, 2nd mixtures and water probably needs to be mixed together…I didn’t and I got a nice chocolate crust on the top.
2. If you follow the recipe you will not be able to turn it out upside down…you will have dry inexpedience everywhere.
3. I spooned some out…mixed it all up and it was good with the crust mixed in..
I am going to give this a try again, only mixing it all up…who knows what will happen…but I love challenges..
Has anyone else tried this one??

Sharon – my mother (who’s mother is “Gram” of Gram’s Recipe Box) commented that you don’t actually turn the cake out of the pan. https://gramsrecipebox.com/2011/02/22/steak-paprika-and-upside-down-pudding-for-dessert/#comments When I made this a while back I also thought it should be turned out – like an upside down cake – but instead it has to do with the cake being made upside down and that’s it. I hope attempt #2 works out for you because we found it to be delicious, warm, chocolate-y and very good!
